Experimental Investigation and Finite Element Analysis of Insulated Concrete Sandwich Panels

Abstract: Insulated concrete sandwich panels are comprised of two outer concrete wythes and an inner layer of foam insulation.  They have been increasingly used because of their advantages of light weight and energy efficiency.  Various shear connectors can be used to connect the two outer concrete wythes.  More recently, Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) shear connectors have been used, which can eliminate thermal bridging and improve the thermal performance. However, due to the flexibility of the FRP shear connectors, the panels assume partial degree of composite. A comprehensive research program has been conducted to study the bending behavior of the sandwich panels with the flexible FRP shear connectors and their applicability for roof/floor constructions. This presentation summaries major findings from this research program. Part I reports a four-phase experimental investigation covering: (1) the development of an innovative FRP plate shear connector, (2) the development of FRP-confined precast concrete sandwich (FPCS) panels, (3) bending tests of full-scale FPCS panels, and (4) creep tests of the sandwich panels. Part II reports a nonlinear explicit dynamic Finite Element (FE) model, which can study both the panels’ static behavior under typical flexural loading and dynamic behavior under blast loading. 

 

Dr. Chen is a currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at Iowa State University. His research is focused on advanced materials, including Fiber-reinforced Polymer (FRP), high performance concrete, steel, and timber for bridge and building applications. Dr. Chen has published about 60 journal, conference publications and reports. He is the Vice Chair of the Committee on Advanced Materials and Structures-ASCE Aerospace Division, Session Chair for six international conferences and member of several professional societies.
