Department of Bridge Engineering
The Department of Bridge Engineering (DBE) of SCE is established based on the Specialty of Railway Construction Engineering (including the Bridge Engineering) founded in 1956. DBE has a State Key Discipline- Bridge & Tunnel Engineering and a Beijing Key Discipline- Disaster Prevention & Mitigation Engineering. It is in charge of fundamental theoretical and applied researches, undergraduate courses and graduate programs in the field of Bridge Engineering and Disaster Prevention & Mitigation Engineering, and has been contributing to the scientific researches and construction works in many important projects, including the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway. DBE has 26 staffs, including 7 professors and 10 associate professors, in several research and teaching groups led by scholars honored as the Zhan Tian-You Achievement Prize and granted by the Government Special Allowance of the State Council of China.
DBE is in charge of many research projects in the field of Bridge Engineering and Disaster Prevention & Mitigation Engineering, many of which are sponsored by the State, Provinces and Ministries, and the average annual funds of DBE amount to more than 10 million RMB. DBE has distinguished reputation in the society of Civil Engineering in China. DBE keeps widespread scientific cooperation with scholars from the United States, Japan, Belgium, Hong Kong and other countries and regions in the world.
The department is qualified for conferring doctoral and master's degrees in Bridge & Tunnel Engineering, Disaster Prevention & Mitigation Engineering. It also accepts doctors from China and abroad as postdoctoral research fellows. In addition, programs for Master’s Degrees of Engineering are also awarded to students majoring in Bridge & Tunnel Engineering and Disaster Prevention & Mitigation Engineering.
The courses offered by DBE include Structural mechanics, Bridge engineering, Concrete bridges, Steel bridges, hydraulics, Finite element analysis, Structural dynamics, Dynamics of vehicle-carriageway system, Random vibrations, Earthquake engineering, etc. It is also responsible for guiding graduation thesis of undergraduate students.
