Introduction to the Graduate Program
The School of Civil Engineering at the Beijing Jiaotong University offers three graduate degree programs, leading to the degrees of Master of Science in Engineering (M. Sc.), Master of Engineering (M. Eng.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The general mandate of the School is the acquisition and dissemination of Civil Engineering knowledge to ensure a high quality of education in all of the degrees offered.
Master of Science (M. Sc.)
The Master of Science (M. Sc.) Program is intended to provide both experience in research that requires the submission of a research thesis, as well as advanced education in a particular field of specialization through coursework.
Unlike the Ph.D. dissertation, the M. Sc. thesis need not necessarily make original contributions to a field, but should demonstrate that the student has an excellent grasp of the topic and has mastered techniques of performing research. The M. Sc. Degree is considered to be a good introduction to further study at the Ph.D. level, but is also an appropriate terminal degree for students wishing to practice at an advanced level in their subject area.

Master of Engineering (M. Eng.)
The Master of Engineering (M. Eng.) Program is primarily a program of graduate coursework intended to provide continuing and advanced education for recent graduates and civil engineers in professional practice. It can be completed by a combination of coursework and a design project. The program can be completed on a part-time basis.

- Environment Engineering
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program aims to provide rigorous training in research, such that graduates will be capable of pursuing independent and novel research in their subsequent careers. Students are expected to demonstrate, by means of a written dissertation, that they have made an original contribution to the existing knowledge in a particular field.
